A planked wooden hull is watertight because of its caulking: fiber driven into every seam between planks, sealed with compound. Caulking is sacrificial by design — it works, ages and gets renewed — so recaulking is a scheduled fact of life for every phinisi, typically addressed seam-by-seam at haul-outs rather than wholesale.
One linguistic detail says how central this is: a leading etymology derives pinisi itself from Bugis mappanisi, “to caulk” — lopi dipanisi, “a caulked boat.” The craft may literally be named after this job.
Why seams open at all
Wood moves. Planks swell when wet and shrink when dry; a hull working through a seaway flexes microscopically along every seam. Dense, stable timbers — ulin below the waterline, teak above — keep that movement small, which is precisely why phinisi builders chose them (see the timber guide), but no wooden ship eliminates it. The caulking absorbs the movement; over years, compression cycles and compound aging reduce its grip, and weeping seams appear.
How the job is done
- Rake out. With the vessel hauled, workers cut the old fiber and compound out of the affected seams with hooked raking irons.
- Drive new fiber. Caulking cotton or oakum (traditionally; synthetic fibers increasingly common) is rolled into strands and driven into the seam in tensioned loops with caulking irons and mallet — the ringing rhythm you hear at every Indonesian slipway. Depth and tightness are judged by feel and sound; too loose leaks, too tight can spring plank edges.
- Pay the seam. The driven fiber is sealed with putty or modern polymer seam compound, then faired and antifouled with the rest of the bottom.
How often, and what it costs in time
Working charter phinisi haul out roughly every 12–24 months, and seam work is a standing item on the list: inspect everything, recaulk what needs it. Full-hull recaulking is rare outside major refits; spot and section work is routine. What guests and buyers should take from this
- A recaulked hull is a maintained hull, not a problem hull. Fresh seam compound at the waterline is evidence of discipline, exactly like fresh antifouling.
- Ask when the vessel last hauled out. Operators who answer with a date and a work list are running their ships properly.
- Dry bilges tell the truth. On a well-caulked phinisi, bilge pumps run occasionally, not continuously.

Sound, feel and the caulker’s judgment
Caulking is one of the last marine trades still audited by ear. A properly driven seam rings back at the iron with a firm, consistent note; a hollow or dead sound flags a void, a spent thread of old cotton, or a plank edge that has moved. Experienced caulkers work down a hull in long rhythmic passes, reading each metre through the mallet, and yard foremen can famously locate a suspect seam from across the slip by sound alone. None of this has been instrumented because none of it has needed to be — the feedback loop between mallet, iron and ear predates the instrumentation and still outperforms it for this material.
Materials have quietly modernized. Traditional oakum and cotton remain in wide use, but synthetic caulking fibers and polymer seam compounds now appear at Indonesian slipways alongside them, valued for consistency and service life. The technique — rake, drive, pay — is unchanged; only the consumables evolved. Purists lose nothing: the seam’s engineering role, absorbing plank movement while keeping the shell tight, is identical regardless of fiber chemistry.
A note on bilge behavior between haul-outs: wooden vessels normally take small amounts of water through fittings and seams — the timbers’ moisture equilibrium is a feature of the construction, not a defect. Crews track pump cycles daily; a change in trend, not the existence of pumping, is the signal that seam work is due. It is one more example of the pattern that runs through all wooden-ship husbandry: the boat reports its own condition continuously, to anyone trained to listen.
