Shell First: the Defining Method

Who Does the Work
The panrita lopi — literally “master of the boat” — sets the dimensions, judges the proportions and decides where every plank lands. Under him work crews of Konjo carpenters, many of whom started as boys carrying timber and graduated plank by plank. There is no drawing office; the transmission is oral, practical and generational, which is exactly what UNESCO’s listing protects. How Long a Build Takes
For a 30–50 m charter phinisi, hull and basic structure typically occupy on the order of 12–18 months of continuous work, with complete build, fit-out and sea trials extending the project to roughly 18–24 months. Timelines stretch with design complexity and funding continuity — the best-documented large build, the 51 m Dunia Baru, famously ran to eight years.
