On a phinisi, teak (Tectona grandis) owns everything you see and touch: laid decks, deckhouses, rails, saloon joinery and cabin interiors. The structural skeleton below — keel, frames, lower planking — belongs to denser ulin and bitti, but from the waterline up, teak’s combination of natural oils, dimensional stability and comfortable weathered texture makes it the finishing timber of the type.

Why teak for decks

  • Natural oils and silica. Teak’s oils resist rot and repel water without coatings; the silica content gives wet teak its famous barefoot grip — a genuine safety feature on a charter deck washed by spray and pool splash.
  • Dimensional stability. Teak moves little across humidity cycles, so laid decks stay tight and caulked deck seams last. On a tropical vessel that bakes at noon and soaks in squalls, stability is the whole game.
  • Graceful weathering. Left bare, teak silvers evenly instead of checking and splintering; oiled, it holds the honey tone luxury interiors favor. Either regime is maintainable — the trade-offs are covered in our maintenance guide.
  • Workability. Unlike glass-hard ulin, teak machines and details beautifully, which is why the fine joinery — cap rails, gratings, cabin soles, furniture — is teak territory.

Where teak goes, piece by piece

Weather deck: laid teak planking over structural beams, payed with seam compound. Deckhouse and trim: teak panels and mouldings. Interior: cabin linings, wardrobes, doors and soles — on luxury builds, often paired with lighter woods to keep cabins bright. Sourcing reality

Indonesia grows plantation teak at scale (Java’s plantations date to the colonial era), so yards have access to legal, documented stock — though grade matters: tight-grained, high-oil heartwood for decks costs multiples of plantation commons. On a luxury build, teak decking and joinery is a significant budget line, and thin-teak-over-plywood shortcuts are one of the differences between price tiers.

What to check on board

Run a hand along the cap rail and look at deck seams: even seam lines, tight plank butts and bungs (plugged fastenings) flush with the surface signal a yard that took time. Living with teak: the owner’s calendar

Teak’s maintenance is a choice between two disciplines. Bare weathered decks ask only for regular salt-water washdowns (fresh water and harsh scrubbing accelerate wear by stripping the soft grain), occasional gentle brightening, and seam attention at haul-outs — the workboat regime, increasingly chosen even on luxury vessels for its honest silver finish and low labor. Oiled or sealed teak holds the golden tone guests photograph, at the price of reapplication cycles measured in weeks to months in tropical UV. Most charter phinisi split the difference: oiled brightwork and rails where the eye lingers, bare or lightly maintained decks underfoot where grip matters most.

Grade tells at the details. Quarter-sawn, tight-grained heartwood stays flat and wears evenly; flat-sawn or sap-streaked stock cups and shadows within seasons. Look at plank width consistency, the tightness of margin planks around fittings, and whether bungs sit flush after years of service — the deck is the easiest place on the vessel to audit a yard’s patience.

Interior teak carries the acoustic and climate load too. Solid joinery damps engine and generator noise better than veneered panels, and teak’s stability keeps doors and drawers working through the humidity swings between air-conditioned cabins and open decks.
