The Seven Sails of a Pinisi Rig: Names, Layout and Function

A classic pinisi rig carries seven sails on two masts: three triangular headsails set on the bowsprit, a large gaff mainsail on the mainmast, a smaller gaff mizzen on the after mast, and a topsail above each gaff. This seven-sail, two-mast arrangement — with gaffs that stand permanently aloft — is the configuration that defines “pinisi” in Bugis-Makassar usage, where the word names the rig rather than the hull.

The seven sails

  1. Outer jib — the furthest headsail out on the bowsprit; adds drive and helps the bow fall off the wind when bearing away.
  2. Middle jib — the workhorse headsail, balancing helm pressure against the big mainsail.
  3. Inner jib (staysail) — closest to the mast; the heavy-weather headsail, often the last sail flying in a squall.
  4. Mainsail — a large quadrilateral gaff sail on the mainmast, the rig’s primary driver. On a pinisi the gaff is a standing spar: the sail is brailed (gathered) to the mast and gaff rather than lowered to the deck.
  5. Mizzen — the smaller gaff sail on the after mast; trims the vessel’s balance and steadies rolling at anchor.
  6. Main topsail — set between the main gaff and masthead, catching cleaner air aloft in light conditions.
  7. Mizzen topsail — the same function over the mizzen; on many working vessels the topsails were the light-air sails, first set and first struck.

Why standing gaffs and brailed sails?

Tropical Indonesian weather delivers short, violent squalls between long calms. A brailing rig lets a small crew shorten sail in seconds — gather the canvas to the spars, ride out the squall, shake it out after — without wrestling a heavy gaff down a swaying mast. Ketch, schooner, or neither?

Western taxonomy stumbles here. Two masts with the larger sail forward suggests “ketch”; the historical label “Sulawesi schooner” persists anyway. The honest answer is that pinisi is its own rig category with a local name that predates the need to translate it — a 19th-century Sulawesi synthesis of European gaff elements on an Austronesian platform.

What survives on modern charter vessels

Modern luxury phinisi vary widely: some carry working canvas and genuinely motor-sail on passages; others carry the masts and standing gaffs primarily as the silhouette that makes the type instantly recognizable. How the sail plan was actually worked

Trading pinisi ran with small crews relative to their canvas, and the rig’s architecture shows it. Brailing meant most sail-handling happened at deck level with lines, not aloft on footropes; the standing gaffs eliminated the heaviest lifting of traditional gaff rigs; and the split sail plan — seven moderate sails instead of three enormous ones — let a watch of a few men adjust power in increments as squalls approached. Contemporary accounts of the cargo trade describe boats shortening from full canvas to storm trim in minutes, then rebuilding it just as fast when the squall passed: the rig as a throttle, worked continuously.

Balance was the helmsman’s tool. With headsails far forward on the bowsprit and the mizzen well aft, trimming the ends against each other steered the boat almost as much as the rudder did — easing the mizzen to fall off the wind, hardening it to round up. On long trade passages this balance was tuned until the vessel held course with minimal helm, saving crew effort hour after hour.

What to look for from the beach or the tender: the sail inventory a vessel actually carries (bent-on sails are visibly furled or brailed at the spars), the condition of running rigging, and whether the bowsprit rigging is set up for working headsails or simplified to stays.
