Welcome to the Land of the Last Dragon on Earth
Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands, from Sabang to Merauke. Each area offers its own charm. Start from the very west, Nangroe Aceh Darussalam with its Blue Lagoon, until the most eastern area, Raja Ampat in West Papua. Komodo Island, on the other hand, located in East Nusa Tenggara, is the land of the last dragons on earth, the Komodo Dragon (Varanus Komodoensis).
Komodo Island is a part of Komodo National Park, which was established in 1980 by the Indonesian central government to protect the endangered Komodo Dragons. In 1991, National Komodo Park was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the New Seven Wonders of Nature in 2011. These giant lizards exist nowhere else on earth and have attracted the interest of scientists studying evolution. Later this place was also dedicated to protecting other species, including marine species. As its popularity increased around the world, Komodo National Park then became the new gateway to Indonesia after Jakarta and Bali.
